Things to do when you bring your pet home:

1. Prepare everyone in your household for the new companion
2. Stock up on all the supplies your pet may need               - Litter box for cat                                                 - Food and water bowls and the food the pet is               used to eating                                                       - A bed                                                                 - Stimulating (and safe!) toy                                   - Scratching post for cat
3. Know all the routines your pet has been used to before living with you, to make the transition easier
4. Pet-proof your home. Put away any products (cleaning, medication, etc.) that may be toxic for your pet.
5. Slow down! Let your pet get adjusted to one room first and then slowly let him/her explore the rest. The same is true for the family. Don't introduce the pet to everyone at once.
